Mighty Midgets At I-76 Speedway

MIGHTY MIDGETS MEET AT I-76 SPEEDWAY

FORT MORGAN, COLORADO, July 18, 2009 – Once again, nature gave racing a break, and I-76 Speedway hosted some of the best.

The RMMRA Midgets were back with 15 of their sleek, super-fast little cars flying around the track. The top four from the two Heat Races, Todd Plemons of Arvada, Keith Rauch of Thornton, Tony Rossi of Arvada, and Chris Sheil of Green Mountain, took the lead and Todd Plemons jumped out ahead at the green flag for the first lap. Keith Rauch made quick work of getting past Plemons, but contended with him at his tail the entire race. Rossi and Sheil stayed in the 4-pak up front, but Rauch kept his lead till the finish for his big win. Plemons maintained his second position, with Rossi and Sheil a fast third and fourth.

The Modifieds continue to produce one superb race after another. After a bumpy second lap, the Main Event field settled into a dance rhythm style culminating at the checkered flag. Dominic Ursetta of Arvada, is still at the top of his game and led the dance, with a smooth patterned motion in each lap from green to the finish for his huge win. Brett Smith of Fort Morgan, worked his way from fourth row back to finish second, and Brad Shelton of Fort Morgan, was back on the track to reclaim his race status, finishing third. Eddie Belec of Lakewood, came up fourth.

Rick Cuckow of Orchard and Greg Gustus of Fort Lupton, hacked out the SportsMods Main Event, trading the lead six times before Cuckow got a grip on the final four laps for the win. Brandon Williams of Fort Morgan, finally bested Gustus with three laps to go, for second place, leaving Gustus for third.

The Street Stocks are raising their car count and concurrently their competition. Justin Simonson of Wheat Ridge, took over the driver’s seat in #31, then took over the Main to take first. Dan Vavrina of Platteville, came back for second, and Dean Gelo of Aurora, was third.

Chad Mann of LaSalle, decided to give the Econo Main Event a new winner, taking the field from green to checkered in the lead. Ethan Penrod of Thornton, finished second, with Jeff Richey of Brighton, third.

The Mod-Lite division was slated to race, but due to the death of a senior Bayne family member, the club withdrew their attendance.

The new, fun Hornets had a new Main Event winner face, as Jason Ludgate of Fort Morgan, powered his four horses to the lead early in the race and finished in first. John Symes of Wheat Ridge, was second, and Laurie Swain of Lakewood, finished third.

Tripp Gaylord finished 5th last Saturday the 18th in his 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo stock car at I-76 Speedway.

Tripp, Ryan and Chase Gaylord were all scheduled to be racing Saturday the 25th at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, CO. (That event was rained out and has been rescheduled for Aug 1, 2009.)
