TOOELE VALLEY — The stars of tomorrow will be on display this weekend, July 20-22, at Miller Motorsports Park as
Superkarts USA (SKUSA) brings its Summer Nationals event to Utah for the first time.
SKUSA is a national karting program that stages amateur and professional kart races across the United States. Its three-event Pro Tour includes the Spring Nationals, held in Phoenix in April, this weekend's Summer Nationals and the season-ending Super Nationals in Las Vegas in November.
The Summer Nationals will attract kart teams from all across the country as well as from Canada and Mexico, and approximately 200 entries are expected. Entrants will compete in eight classes; four classes of shifter karts, the fastest of which will exceed 100 mph on the 0.9-mile Miller Kart Track circuit, and four classes of TaG (Touch- and-Go) karts. Competitors will range in age from nine years old to 60-plus years old. There are a number of young Utah competitors entered, all of whom would love to have a victory from this prestigious event on their record.
The weekend gets underway unofficially on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., as the teams will face off in the Summer Nationals 100 Endurance race. This will be a "fun" race, contested in the rental karts from the Miller Kart Track on the same circuit layout that will be used throughout the weekend, and will go for 100 laps. With pit stops, driver changes and varying strategies, the action is sure to be intense even if it is just for fun.
The actual event starts on Friday, with practice sessions throughout the day. Saturday and Sunday will be race days, with each day including warm-ups, qualifying sessions, two heat races and a feature race. Heat races will start at approximately 10:00 a.m. on each day, and the feature races will start at approximately 2:30 p.m. and last until 5:30 p.m. Public kart rentals will be available after the racing action is concluded each day.
Admission for Saturday and Sunday is $6/day for adults or $10 for the weekend, while spectator kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Military personnel are eligible for a 25-percent discount on tickets. Admission on Thursday and Friday is free of charge to everyone. Passes offering access to the SKUSA pit area are available for $15/day or $25/weekend.
