Damien Nash

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Denver Broncos reserve running back Damien Nash, 24, collapsed and died after a charity basketball game in St. Louis on Saturday.

The death is the second to a Broncos player since the end of the season. Cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed while riding in a limousine on Jan. 1.

Nash, who played collegiately at Missouri, rushed for 66 yards last season after signing with the Broncos as a free agent in August. In 2005, he likewise played in three games for the Tennessee Titans.

Denver Broncos running back Damien Nash, a former star at Missouri and two area high schools, died Saturday night at Christian Hospital, a spokesman said.

The cause of death was unknown. The spokesman said he died at 6:40 p.m.

Earlier in the afternoon, sources said Nash competed in a charity basketball game at Riverview Gardens High and collapsed afterward.

The event was held to benefit The Darris Nash Find A Heart Foundation, which raises money for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, 25, is the older brother of Damien Nash. The foundation was created last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

Former Missouri receiver Sean Coffey was at the event with Nash.

"Everything was normal. ...We were playing around at the game. ... he was fine,’’ Coffey said.

"I give my best to his family. This is crazy. I can’t believe this is happening. It was the first time I had seen him in a couple of years. I can’t believe he’s gone. I’m so happy I got to see him one last time.’’

Nash, 24, played sparingly for the Broncos last season. He had 24 carries for 98 yards. He played for the Tennessee Titans in 2005, carrying six times for 32 yards.

"Coach Gary Pinkel is obviously shocked and saddened like we all are,’’ said Chad Moller, director of media relations at Missouri.

Before going to Missouri, Nash, 5-feet 10, 220 pounds, played high school football for three seasons at Riverview Gardens. In his senior year, Nash followed his coach at Riverview, Darren Sunkett, to East St. Louis High, from which he graduated. He played two seasons at Missouri after starting at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.
