Sonny Emerson (engine builder & drag racer) Died 1/26/2012 - Auto Racing Forum

Some of you who are old enough to remember Lakeside and Englewood, may remember Sonny Emerson, he had Mechanical Engineering, and built engines, he built engine or worked on them for Don Wilson, among others.

Sonny died after a long illness in the Veteran's Hospital in Denver, he had been in the Navy out of high school. He grew up in Adams City, Colorado, he also lived in Westminster and Denver.

He along with me, (Cherry Emerson) was a founder of Emerson House, Inc., in Denver, a private prison and halfway house 1976-1982. Sonny went on to earn a BA from the University of Colorado in Criminal Psychology, awarded magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

He drove some drag race cars, but generally had a driver, I especially remember an SS Super Sport that was downright fantastic. I believe that car held some records at Bandimere for a while.

We were divorced, he remarried a couple of times and was married to a Vicky Emerson, at the time of his death.

I remember Sonny's shop over next to the tracks in Commerce City, He was one of the first to have a Dyno in Denver, He was over at Wayne Stallsworth place from time to time, Sonny was a head of his time and a bit of a character to say the least! Thanks Cherry........................R.I.P.
