Eggleston, Yackey, Avants, and Smith, thrill the CNS fans in Late Model opener

(Dacono, CO - 04-21-2012) The Gillett Vet Late Models made their 2012 season debut and the large crowd at Colorado National Speedway were treated to one of the best night's of racing in years. Chris Eggleston, Bruce Yackey, Roger Avants, and Rick Smith, all crossed the finish line within feet of one another with Eggleston just barely out in front taking the victory.

Gillett Vet Late Models
An incredible field of Late Models was on hand to open the 2012 Gillett Vet Late Model season at Colorado national Speedway. Multi time champions #12 Bruce Yackey took the early lead with #27 Roger "the ice man" Avants in tow. Youngsters #22 Chris Eggleston and #11 Darren Robertson held 3rd and 4th but #31 Rick Smith was working his way to front in a furious pace. Eggleston worked his way passed Avants for 2nd and began to track down race leader Yackey. With less than 10 laps to go Yackey, Eggleston and Smith were running nose to tail and while it seemed that Smith may have had the fastest car he wasn't able to overtake either Eggleston or Yackey.

With just 6 laps to go the yellow flag came out setting up a 6 lap shoot out bringing the large CNS crowd to their feet. Yackey elected to take the inside on the restart and Eggleston was along side. In the final laps of the race the top 4 drivers thrilled the fans running within inches of one another. Eggleston was edging Yackey on the outside through the corners yet each lap Yackey would pull up along side Chris on the front straight. The top four cars crossed the finish line in a tight pack and it was the black and orange #22 of Chris Eggleston taking the win, followed closely by #12 Bruce Yackey, #27 Roger Avants, #31 Rick Smith, and #39 Jack Nugent rounded out the top 5.

FAST DASH WINNER: #12 Bruce Yackey
DASH WINNER: #74 Dan Savage
QUICK TIME: #22 Chris Eggleston 16.203

NTC Logistics Super Stocks
#3 Michael Cox led the first 19 laps of the Super Stock main event but a late race caution flag setup a classic CNS style double file restart. On the restart #13 "Racin" Jason Morris and Cox raced side by side until Morris finally secured the lead just in time to take the win. Cox came in 2nd, #61 John Humphry was 3rd, #88 David Rothrock was 4th and surprising rookie 6x Josh Parker was 5th.

FAST DASH WINNER: #3 Michael Cox
DASH WINNER: #77 Kevin Keller
QUICK TIME: #13 Jason Morris 19.565

RMLRA Legend Cars
There was a wild start to the Legend main event when car #21 Ryan Jones and #44 Kevin Kurtz made contact coming out of turn 2 sending Kurtz upside down and end over end down the back straightaway. A nervous crowd cheered in relief when it was announced that Kevin was okay, sadly his car suffered major damage. After the restart last years champ #66 Kyle Clegg grabbed the lead but #06 Mike Gallegos was not about to let him run away with the race and hounded him lap after lap. Behind Clegg and Gallegos a great battle for 3rd place heated up between #58 Kyle Ray, #22 Chris Eggleston and #08 Jace Hanson held 5th spot. With 7 laps to go race leader Clegg bobbled coming out of turn 2 and #06 Mike Gallegos assumed the lead. Gallegos was able to masterfully navigate lapped traffic and took the checkered flag. #66 Clegg barely held off 3rd place #58 Ray for 2nd while #22 Eggleston was a close 4th and #08 Jace Hanson was 5th.

FAST DASH WINNER: #66 Kyle Clegg
DASH WINNER: #7 Corey Seip
QUICK TIME: #66 Kyle Clegg 19.009

A Comfort Shack Figure 8s
John Martello had the pole position in the A Comfort Shack Figure 8's in his green and black Camaro but it was last years Figure 8 champ #24 Joe Martinez who quickly jumped out to an early lead. After just 5 laps Martinez had built a massive lead over #26 Nick Martinez and #50 Justin Mckeachie. After a few close calls in the "X" Joe cruised to an easy win followed by #50 Justin Mckeachie, #15 Jereme Wall, and #26 Nick Martinez.

DASH WINNER: #24 Joe Martinez

Rocky Mountain Legends Racing Association April 24, 2012

Harold Kraus

Opening night for the RMLRA at Colorado National Speedway last night, and twenty-six Legends were on hand. You could not have asked for a better day of weather as this warm sunny day in April provided plenty of good racing for the Legends. A short meeting for RMLRA drivers with an CNS official to explain the new procedure of qualifying for races took place after a practice session on the track. It looks like it was what many drivers wanted. #66 Kyle Clegg had the top qualifying speed with a time of 19.009. In the feature race seven drivers would get under Kyleʼs time.

In the feature race Kyle Clegg (2011 CNS champion) jumped off to a lead and held it for many laps. Mike Gallegos a veteran Legend driver moved up close and became a contender for several laps finally passing him and weaving through heavy traffic, to become the first RMLRA winner of the season by 1.523 seconds better than Clegg. The 2011, RMLRA champion Kyle Ray finished third, with Chris Eggleston and Jace Hansen the top five finishers.

We did have a red flag on the second lap of the race when #44 Kevin Kurtz and #21 Ryan Jones made contact on the back straight away with Kurtz suffering major damage. It looked like he got on top of the car of Jones and eventually rolled on his top. Both drivers were attended to by the medical staff. I talked with Ray Jones this afternoon and he passed along to me that Ryan was ok and at the time, they had the car in shop under repair. In talking with Kevin Sunday afternoon, he was stiff and sore in spots. His race car is badly damaged but said that he will try to be back in about a month. When the track went back to green flag racing the race went green the rest of the race.

Our next race is scheduled for May 5, 2012 at Colorado National Speedway. Races will start one hour later starting in May.

Making their first start in a Legend car Saturday,
