TULARE, CA - MAY 14, 2012... In one of the most spectacular drives in the history of the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series, Elk Grove's Kyle Larson won the Faria Memorial from the twentieth starting spot. The $1,500 victory at Steve Faria's Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway was Larson's second triumph in as many nights, but there is more to this story.

After sweeping the previous night's action in Keith Ford's #72 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Ellis, Larson was involved in a heat race tangle and flipped his machine. The Ford Motorsports team found that Kyle's coil-over mount suffered heavy damage and the young driver would take over the team car, piloted by Ronnie Gardner. Gardner, who subbing this night for Ryan Bernal, vacated the #73 torsion-bar Spike and Larson would start at the rear of the sixteen car semi-main. Now in an unfamiliar car, Kyle had managed his way to fourth in seven laps before the event was called for time.

With an eight drawn for the inversion, Chris Ennis and Matt Mitchell shared the front row of the twenty-two car feature. At the drop of the green, it was Mitchell that took command from his outside line before Ennis, Danny Faria Jr., and Markus Niemela tangled in turn one. The three drivers were able to restart at the back and Peter Murphy inherited the pole position.

On the restart, Murphy took the lead down the front chute before Mitchell executed a "slide job" in the first turn. Murphy held second and Bud Kaeding streaked past Rusty Carlile for third heading into turn three. Last year's champion Richard Vander Weerd dropped Carlile to fifth before reaching the flag stand and completing the first lap. Kaeding and Vander Weerd slid past Murphy in the next corners to claim second and third as Kyle Larson was already up to eleventh.

By the ninth lap, Mitchell reached slower traffic with Kaeding and Vander Weerd close behind. Kaeding applied pressure to Mitchell for the lead as Vander Weerd looked for an opening from third. Murphy still held fourth and Larson was closing fast in fifth. With lapped traffic racing side by side, the battle up front was intense and Mitchell held command.

After a yellow flag on lap nineteen bunched the field in a single file restart, it was Mitchell up front followed by Kaeding, Larson, and Vander Weerd. Kaeding shot to the lead down the back straight and Mitchell fired back. Kaeding was too strong and looked for his third win of the year. Heading into turn one, Larson threw a successful "slide job" on Mitchell for second and gave chase after the leader.

With five laps to go, Larson had reeled in Kaeding and threw a turn three "slide job" for the top spot. The move worked and after brief contact, Kyle marched away from the field. At the checkered flags, Kyle Larson claimed the victory, followed by Bud Kaeding, Jace Vander Weerd, Matt Mitchell, and Jace Vander Weerd, who started nineteenth.

Before scoring the dramatic 30-lap main event win, Kyle Larson qualified sixth and placed eighth in his heat race. Switching to Keith Ford's #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, the Eldora 4 Crown Winner was fourth in the semi-main and earned the feature's Kaeding Performance / Ringers Gloves "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors with a twentieth to first place run. In two nights of action, Larson is currently fourteenth in the point standings.

Campbell's Bud Kaeding raced Junior Bowman's #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet to second after starting eighth. The 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion was second fast in time trials and won the Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heat Race #2. Kaeding was strong in the main event and led laps twenty to twenty-five before falling to Larson. Heading into Hanford on June 9th, Bud holds a commanding fifty-one point advantage over the competition.

For the second night in a row, Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia finished third and earned the night's LRB Inc. Race Products Award for his efforts. Driving the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard was third quick on the night and placed second in his heat race. The defending series champion was in striking distance of the lead and is currently sixth in the point chase.

Yorba Linda's Matt Mitchell scored fourth in the 30-lap Chris & Brian Faria Memorial. Piloting Steve Watt's #18 Christian Stover Foundation / SWE Maxim, Mitchell timed in ninth fast and won the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. The former USAC Western Midget Series Rookie of the Year led the first nineteen laps of the feature and is second in points heading to Hanford.

Visalia's Jace Vander Weerd drove the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim to fifth from the back. The 2010 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year qualified twelfth and flipped in his heat race, scoring an eighth place finish. Vander Weerd regrouped and took third in the shortened semi-main. As this writing goes to press, Jace is sixteenth in the standings.

In his second career non-winged start, D.J. Netto of Hanford earned the Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award over the thirty-three car field. Driving the family owned #7N Netto Ag Inc. / Van De Pol Enterprises KB, D.J. was fifth in his heat race, second in the semi-main, and eighteenth in the feature. Netto currently sits twenty-seventh in USAC West Coast 360 points.

Tipton's "Hollywood" Danny Faria Jr. won the night's 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #3. Piloting his 17V Johnston Calf Pens / Buster & Ziggy Enterprises Bullet, Faria was seventh quick on the night and finished nineteenth in the main event. "Hollywood" is fourth in point standings as the series will be idle until June 9th.

Austin Liggett of Tracy won the shortened Competition Suspension Inc. / Diversified Machine Inc. Semi-Main. Driving the family owned #83 Excel Environmental Services / Home Connections Inc. Maxim, Austin was eleventh fast on the night and sixth in his heat race. The Wingless Spec Sprint graduate scored eleventh in the main event and is seventeenth in points.

OBERLIN — If drivers in the United Rebel Sprint Series are needing a speed rush, they need look no further than the dirt track in Lexington, Neb. And this Sunday, the dirt oval at Dawson County Speedway will feature the return of the Rebels.

“It's just a big, fast track,” said driver Zach Blurton. “It's all about staying straight and not losing momentum. You just have to stay on the gas.”

Sunday's race will be the third one this season for the URSS. Jason Martin won the opener at Beaver County Raceway in Beaver, Okla., in April, while Jeff Radcliffe won the second day of the Cow Chip Spring Nationals event and took home $1,500.

Blurton battled engine issues at the season-opener, but the Jetmore driver said he expects that to all be fixed by this weekend. “It's going to be good to get back going with the URSS again,” he said.

The URSS last raced at Dawson County Speedway on Aug. 14. Darren Berry took home the win that night. Berry expects to compete Sunday, unless his wife goes into labor with their child. “I should hopefully get back up there and hopefully have a good run,” he said. “We've been running good the rest of the year.” Berry, much like Blurton, said he expects the race to be fast-paced. “It's pretty smooth and fast,” he said about the track. “It's got a little bank to it, but not too big. You should be able to flat-foot it around there.”

Lexington has played host to 10 URSS races since 2007, with Smokey Fairbank winning the inaugural race. The track hosted the Rebels twice last year, with C.J. Johnson taking home the win May 22, followed by Berry on Aug. 14.

Blurton is hoping the weekend is a slingshot into the remainder of the season, and perhaps a good start at a run at a possible URSS national title. “The last few years I've been trying to get used to the car and drivers and how we race,” he said. “Now I feel I have better experience for this year.”

Radcliffe and Johnson are tied with 292 points each in the national title standings after two events, while defending champ Ray Seemann is second with 284.

TULARE, CA – MAY 12, 2012… Making his first start with the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series, Elk Grove’s Kyle Larson swept the opening night of the Faria Memorial at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway. Not only did the Eldora 4-Crown winner set fast time, win his heat race, and claim the 30-lap feature, Larson also triumphed in the companion winged King of the West 410 main event.

Piloting Keith Ford’s #72 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Ellis, Larson bested the other twenty-seven cars in Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Time Trials and won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Starting fourth in the main event, Kyle used some daring moves to slip past Richard Vander Weerd for the lead on the twenty-third circuit. After a yellow flag bunched the field one lap later, Larson had an excellent restart and drove away from the field to earn the $1,500 victory. Bud Kaeding, Vander Weerd, Matt Mitchell, and Brent Kaeding rounded out the top five at Tulare.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell drove Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet to second after starting fifth. The defending wingless Faria Memorial winner qualified fifth and finished second to Larson in his heat race. With over two-thirds of the feature completed, Bud had made his way to third when second place Ryan Bernal spun bringing out a yellow flag. The 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion looked to overtake Kyle on the restart, but it was not to be on this night. Kaeding now leads the standings with a 13 point advantage over the competition.

Visalia’s Richard Vander Weerd led the majority of the feature before falling to Larson. The defending series champion scored third in the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, earning the night’s LRB Inc. Race Products Award for his efforts. Earlier in the program, Vander Weerd was fourth quick in time trials and placed third in his heat race. As this writing goes to press, Richard is sixth in the hunt for the championship.

Matt Mitchell of Yorba Linda claimed fourth in the 30-lap main event at Tulare. Piloting Steve Watt’s #18 Christian Stover Foundation / SWE Maxim, Mitchell was second fast on the night and placed fourth in his heat race. The USAC/CRA standout is currently fifth in points heading to the Saturday finale of the Faria Memorial.

Campbell’s Brent Kaeding powered Junior Bowman’s #29K Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet to a fifth place finish after starting ninth. The 13-time Golden State Challenge Champion qualified tenth quick on the night and won the Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heat Race #2. Making a rare wingless start, the Northern California legend sits twenty-first in series points.

Kevin Barnes of Fresno earned the night’s Kaeding Performance / Ringers Gloves “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with an eleventh place run after starting twentieth. Driving his #36B B&K Towing / Coventry Race Engines Eagle, the veteran driver was eighteenth fast on the night, sixth in his heat race, and fourth in the semi-main. Barnes is currently eleventh in the standings heading to tonight’s Faria Memorial finale.

Hollister’s Ryan Bernal won the night’s 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #3 behind the wheel of Keith Ford’s #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike. The 2011 Rookie of the Year was third quick in time trials and scored fifteenth in the feature after a spin ended his hopes for victory. Bernal fell to second in points and may miss tonight’s finale of the Faria Memorial to attend his high school prom.
“Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. of Tipton raced to victory in the SBI Fuel Systems / Integra Racing Shocks Heat Race #4. Driving his #17V Johnston Calf Pens / Buster & Ziggy Enterprises Bullet, Faria was sixteenth fast on the night and claimed sixth in the main event after starting fourteenth. The hard charger has moved to third in points as he looks to win the race that honors his family.

Hanford’s Justyne Hamblin won the night’s 12-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Diversified Machine Inc. Semi-Main. Piloting the JH Motorsports’ #8 Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino / Kings River Commodities Speed Tech, the 2009 Champion qualified twenty-first, finished fifth in her heat race, and scored tenth in the feature after starting eighteenth. Hamblin is tenth in points and will be looking for the Tulare victory.

The USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series will return to action tonight, May 12th, at Steve Faria's Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway for the finale of the "Chris & Brian Faria Memorial Weekend." Joining the showcase will be the Cancen Oil King of the West Sprint Cars and IMCA Modifieds. Located at the Tulare County Fairgrounds at the corner of Bardsley and K Streets in Tulare, the Front Gates will open at 5:00pm, with time Trials at 6:00pm, and Racing at 7:00pm. Reserved Grandstand Tickets are $20 and Bleacher Tickets are $17. Advance tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling the track office at (559) 688-0909.

The King dominates features at Williams Grove, tightens championship points race

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - May 12, 2012 - Steve Kinser cruised to a pair of victories Saturday at a packed and rowdy Williams Grove Speedway, first snapping his 27-race winless streak with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and later claiming the Morgan Cup on behalf of the series.

Kinser, the World of Outlaws career wins leader, entered the event with only five feature laps led this season. That changed dramatically as he led the final 23 laps of the $12,000-to-win main event and then dominated all 12 laps of the Morgan Cup - a race featuring five World of Outlaws drivers and five Pennsylvania Posse drivers in a showdown about bragging rights, a sterling silver trophy and an additional $4,000 prize.

"We had been running top fives, but hadn't been able to get to Victory Lane," Kinser said. "We got two tonight."

It was his 571st World of Outlaws feature win and 38th total Outlaws victory at the famed half mile. Both numbers are more than double the next closest driver.

The win combined with trouble from Sammy Swindell and Donny Schatz, who entered the race 54 and 46 points ahead of Kinser, respectively, created an even closer points battle.

Swindell, who had a tire issue while running fifth on lap 23, finished 24th. He holds an eight-point advantage over Kinser. Schatz, who violently flipped in turns three and four on the restart following Swindell's caution, is third in the standings - 12 points behind Swindell.

Kinser qualified fourth quickest of the 41 drivers and charged from fourth to second in his heat race to lock himself into the dash. The random inversion was a six, starting Kinser on the inside of the second row - which is where he finished.

Kinser darted to second on the opening lap of the feature as Craig Dollansky rocketed into the lead. As drivers were in various lines across the track, Kinser was the premier car on the bottom and he used a run off turn two to grab the lead on lap 8.

He quickly pulled away until the first caution of the race on lap 11 for Logan Schuchart, who spun out between turns one and two. Kinser chose the inside lane for the restart and again found himself with a comfortable before the caution waved on the restart lap for a handful of cars who collided in turn four.

"The only way we was going to get into any trouble was trying to pass some lapped cars," he said. "I don't know if I could have gotten out in the second groove and passed or not. I think I could move around as good as anybody."

The inside lane worked for Kinser again on the restart and more drivers began to move to the bottom groove. Greg Hodnett passed Dollansky for the runner-up position on lap 12 and closed on Kinser as the duo entered traffic on lap 19.

The cautions for Swindell and Schatz closed the gap for Hodnett, who was unable to get around Kinser for the top spot.

"We did the best we could," he said. "Unfortunately it turned out second. Considering Steve Kinser, the greatest World of Outlaws driver ever, just beat us, I think I can live with it."

Polesitter Danny Lasoski, who dropped to fourth place in the first nine laps, rebounded toward the end of the race and he passed Hodnett for second place on the restart following Swindell's caution only to have the position negated by Schatz's red flag.

"Tonight starting on the pole we thought we had a really good shot at winning," Lasoski said. "Steve went by us and he was stuck real good. And then the middle of the race here we come when (the track) cleaned off.

"As soon as we had the red flag I don't know what happened. We pushed back off and had no brakes, so it was just like hanging on the last few laps."

Lance Dewease finished fourth and Dollansky was fifth. Aaron Ott drove from 12th to sixth, Daryn Pittman placed seventh, Stevie Smith was eighth and Danny Dietrich charged from 22nd to ninth to earn the KSE Hard Charger Award.

Adam Wilt, who set quick time with a lap of 16.936 seconds, rounded out the top 10.

Lasoski, Sheldon Haudenschild, Hodnett and Pittman each claimed a heat race. Don Kreitz Jr. won the Last Chance Showdown.

Jimmie Johnson would coax all the fuel out of the car, and hold off a hard charging Tony Stewart to deliver car owner Rick Hendrick the teams 200 victory. The victory in the Bojangles' Southern 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway is Johnsons 1st win in 2012, and his 56th career win,

Johnson would pit with 64 lap remaining in the race for fuel and tires, and assume the lead from Kyle Busch with 43 laps remaining. Johnson was holding off a determined charge from defending series champion Tony Stewart when a crash involving Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman set the stage for a green-white-checkered finish. Johnson would pull away from Stewart a final time on the ensuing restart allowing Denny Hamlin to slip into second when Stewart experienced fuel pick up problems.

The late wreck involving Busch and Newman led to a post-race scuffle between the two crews on pit road after the race. the incident was caught on tape

Joey Logano would need a green/white/checker and a little punt to win the Nationwide race at Darlinton Raceway.

Logano driving the #20 Dollar General Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, and last weeks winner at Talladega would line up in the third spot behind race and points leader Elliot Sadler, and Logano's team mate Denny Hamlin in second. At the drop of the green flag Logano eager to jump ahead of Hamlin tried to bump Sadler out ahead of the pack, instead punted Sadler into the wall, and costing Sadler dearly in the Nationwide points battle

This is Logano's third victory and fifth top-10 finish in 2012. This is the second time Logano has won back-to-back races. He first did it in October 2009 at Kansas Speedway and Auto Club Speedway.
Biffle, who has posted back-to-back wins at Darlington in 2005 and 2006, picked up his second Coors Light Pole Award for 2012, his second at Darlington and the 11th of his career.

When ask about his qualifying lap Biffle had this to say "It was a pretty uneventful lap. The car just had a ton of grip -- it stuck to the race track really, really well. I felt like I was a little bit light down in Turns 1 and 2 -- I should have been a little bit quicker down there -- but I got a lot out of it in 3 and 4, so it was a great lap."
The one-time Texas chicken farmer who became a household name because of his British/American breed of Ford-V8-powered Shelby Cobra sports roadsters, was also the world’s longest-living heart-transplant recipient of more than 20 years.

Besides production of the Shelby Cobra and performance-enhanced Ford Shelby Mustangs, Shelby is known as the man who created the Cobra Daytona Coupes, with bodies designed by a young Peter Brock, and led the team that beat Ferrari to win the World Manufacturer’s Championship in 1965.

The following year, his group won the 24 Hours of LeMans outright with a team of Ford GT40s. Then they did it again in 1967. It was not Shelby’s first trip to the winner’s circle at LeMans, however. As a driver for Aston Martin teamed up with Roy Salvadori, Shelby helped win the 1959 LeMans while setting a new average-speed record of 112.569.

Shelby is believed to be the only person to win Le Mans as a driver, as a manufacturer and as a team owner.

After the 1959 Le Mans race, Shelby was sidelined from competitive driving for good because of a congenital heart defect. But with his indomitable spirit, he parlayed that disappointment into a world-beating career as a manufacturer of brilliant sports cars and race cars.

Shelby was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Leesburg, Texas, and moved to Dallas with his family when he was seven. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a flight instructor and test pilot. Returning to Texas after the war, he launched several modest careers as an oilfield worker, operator of a dump-truck business and, famously, as a chicken farmer. The chicken-farm venture ended abruptly when after initial success, all his chickens died of limp-neck disease.

After that, Shelby decided to turn his hobby of auto-racing into a full-time endeavor, winning road races in cars that included an MGTC. In the mid-50s, his skills caught the attention of Aston Martin race-team manager John Wyer, who enlisted Shelby into the factory team. He and Salvadori drove a DBR1/300 to victory at Le Mans, where Shelby met the man who would become a lifelong rival, Enzo Ferrari.

Back in the States after revealing his driving-career-ending heart condition, Shelby tried his hand at several auto-related businesses, but he dreamed of building his own performance sports car that would combine the power of an American V8 with the nimble handling of a British roadster.

Shelby finally got his chance in 1961 when the A.C. sports-car company of England lost its main source for engines to power the aluminum-bodied two-seat ACE roadster, and was casting around for a new supplier. Shelby forged a deal with the British automaker, and Ford, which had nothing to compete on the track against the Chevy Corvette, signed on with an agreement to supply its small-block V8 for Shelby’s endeavor.

After re-engineering the AC ACE to handle the V8 power, Shelby American set up shop in Venice, Calif., in March 1962 to produce the Shelby Cobra. In April, the first Shelby Cobra with its 260cid Ford engine was shipped to the New York Auto Show, where it appeared in the Ford display to tremendous acclaim.

The Cobra soon was adapted to Ford’s new small-block engine, the 289, and in 1964, the Cobra received some real muscle with the installation of Ford’s big-block race engine, the 427. That gave the lightweight roadster an acceleration time of zero to 100 in under 13 seconds, according to contemporary reports.

While the 289 and 427 Cobras were being sold to consumers, Shelby American was having great success with them on the race track. The Cobra’s tremendous performance helped Shelby American win nearly every race they entered during the 1963 season. Shelby then turned his eyes to Europe in hopes of beating his nemesis, Ferrari.

But in the 1964 LeMans event, Shelby discovered that the Cobras with bolt-on hard tops did not have the aerodynamics to compete against the streamlined Italian champions, losing position on the three-mile Mulsanne Straight where the Cobras could reach only 150 mph compared with 180 for the Ferrari 250 GTOs. The Ferraris dominated the Cobras and sent Shelby back to America with plans for a more-streamlined coupe version of his race car.

Twenty-three-year-old Peter Brock was assigned the task of making the Cobra more slippery at high speed, and he designed a unique solution that had some experts shaking their heads, as well as flying in the face of race-car aesthetics of the era. But the Shelby Daytona Coupe performed brilliantly, and with famed drivers Bob Bondurant and Dan Gurney at the wheel was able to hit 196 mph on the Mulsanne Straight.

More importantly, the Daytona Coupe trounced the Ferraris to win the GT class at LeMans, and went on to win the World Manufacturer’s Championship.

Next came the Ford-led effort to beat the Italians at their own game after Enzo Ferrari had imperiously snubbed Ford’s efforts to acquire his automobile business. That resulted in the amazing GT40, so named because of its roof height in inches, which Shelby brought to LeMans to win first-place victories two years in a row. In the 1966 24-hour race, the GT40s crossed the finish line in first, second and third place.

“Carroll Shelby was an automotive visionary and leader,” said Dan Gurney, who was part of the Shelby American racing team and an American legend in the car building racing world. “His West Texas downhome bib overall style had a huge emotional impact on me and when he launched his now legendary Ford-powered Cobra team, I found myself a very willing volunteer to lend my driving ability to his quest to take on the established European teams on their home turf."

For the 1967 model year, the Shelby GT500 was added to the Mustang stable. In March 1967, the run of the original Shelby Cobras ended with the final 427 models.

Throughout the years, Shelby has kept his hand in performance- and sports-car building. From 1983 to 1989, he teamed up with Chrysler and its president, former Ford chief and unabashed Shelby fan Lee Iacocca, to produce performance vehicles, including work on the prototype that would lead to the Dodge Viper.

Shelby American also produced several new products, including the exotic Shelby Series 1 sports car and the CSX continuation series of Shelby Cobras. Much to his disdain, the Cobra has been the most-replicated car ever; when you see a Cobra on the street these days, it’s most likely a fiberglass replica of the original, mainly because the values of “real” Cobras have flown through the roof.

Shelby has kept busy with Ford in recent years, with the Dearborn, Mich., automaker’s recent Mustang Shelby GT500 reliving the successes of the earlier models with astounding performance. He was also a regular presence at Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions, where his own supercharged 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake sold in 2007 for a staggering $5.5 million. Shelby celebrated his 80th birthday during a Barrett-Jackson auction gala.

"Carroll was a personal friend to me, to my late mother and brother, as well as a good friend of Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. :In fact, he meant so much to me, I named my only daughter Shelby after him. He was larger than life, responsible for some of the most legendary cars including the Cobra, the GT40, the Shelby Mustang and Viper.

"His cars command some of the highest-prices on our auction block, and for good reason, because when you buy a Shelby you know you’re going to own a piece of automotive history. His passing is a true loss for all of us, both at Barrett-Jackson and within the industry as a whole. He was an icon I was proud to call a friend.”

Edsel Ford II, member of the Board of Directors of Ford Motor Company and great-grandson of Henry Ford. noted the importance of Shelby's enduring partnership with Ford.

“At Ford, Carroll Shelby will always be remembered as an innovator, a performance vehicle legend but most importantly an incredible partner and close friend for more than 60 years,” Ford said. “The Ford and Shelby collaboration is something that has always been very important to me personally and Carroll will continue to be the inspiration behind our future collaboration that will carry his name. My family and I are honored to have had Carroll as a friend and part of our family. He will never be forgotten.”

Carroll Shelby was well-known for his philanthropic efforts. In respect to his own heart transplant in September 1991, Shelby created the Carroll Shelby Foundation to aid needy children with life-threatening illnesses and fund transplants of hearts and other organs. His foundation also provides support for other charity organizations and automotive-education programs.

And to celebrate his Texas roots, Shelby launched the World Chili Cookoff competition in 1967, which continues to this day.

The charismatic Shelby has been the recipient of a staggering number of industry awards over the years, and he is rightfully seen as a towering figure in automotive performance, American style. He also will go down in the annals as one of the true greats in an auto industry where mavericks and independent thinkers are not always appreciated. His personal character, vision and perseverance will long be remembered.

Shelby is survived by his three children Patrick, Michael and Sharon; his sister, Anne Shelby Ellison of Fort Worth; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his wife Cleo. Funeral plans are not immediately available. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Carroll Shelby Foundation (www.cscf.org).

Derek Thorn ready to return to SRL SOUTHWEST TOUR (Super Late Models) in the midst of a busy spring schedule in NASCAR K&N West Pro Series

BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA (May 9, 2012) – Lakeport's Derek Thorn will take a break from his duties in the Bob Bruncati Sunrise Ford #6 in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West and move back into the #43 Campbell Motorsports entry in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour this weekend at the Las Vegas Bullring. Thorn runs fifth in the 2012 K&N West standings and third in the 2012 SRL Southwest Tour standings as well.

Running for both series championships, Thorn is in the midst of ten consecutive races jumping back-and-forth between the two cars. During this stretch, Thorn has put together second and ninth place finishes in the tour car to go along with his first K&N West win along with a seventh and a 12th. Thorn also scored a pair of poles during April.

"It's been an intense five week stretch for myself and especially the teams. We continue for five more weeks before we get a week off," Thorn said. "I'm lucky to have two well run and organized teams that are both set up and prepared for championship runs."

Thorn had a strong showing two weeks ago on the road course at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT where he drove up into the top-five before a late race melee resulted in a 12th place finish. Thorn again ran in the top-five at Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday but had to overcome a mix-up with lapped traffic to finish seventh on the night.

Saturday's SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour show at the Las Vegas Bullring brings Thorn back to a track where he has enjoyed great success in the past. The 2011 season saw Thorn score back-to-back wins and poles at Las Vegas including winning the "Fall Classic" open show from the rear of the field.

"This weekend is going to be a lot of fun in Vegas with Byron Campbell Motorsports and the Hronis Brothers, Pete and Kosta," Thorn said. "I'm looking forward to getting our SRL car back up to speed. Mike Keen and the entire crew have been working hard for this weekend."

The "Blackjack 121" at Las Vegas will be Thorn's eighth appearance at the 3/8ths mile paved venue and he also swept the action in May of 2010 for the Southwest Tour there. His 2012 SRL success has him ranked second in the national Sunoco Challenge points that ranks drivers in Late Model series across the country. The Sunoco Challenge champion will earn a NASCAR K&N Pro Series, East test with Joe Gibbs Racing in the winter.

Action this weekend at Las Vegas gets started with practice on Friday evening, before another round of practice, qualifying, and the "Blackjack 121" on Saturday. Roster: http://srlsouthwesttour.com/news.php..._from=&ucat=1&

Eric McClure addressed the media at Darlington Raceway one week after being involved in a terrifying crash at Talladega Motor Speedway. A hit so hard to the inside wall McClure was airlifted to an Alabama hospital, where he spent two nights with a concussion and internal bruising.

McClure says he remembers only bits and pieces of his accident at Talladega, but knows he had lost his brakes before the impact.
http://youtu.be/nv5YYOekRoQ

Veteran driver Jeff Green will be in the #14 Hefty®/Reynolds Wrap® Toyota, as McClure has not been cleared by NASCAR to compete this weekend.

The TriStar Motorsports team has conducted an inspection with NASCAR officials on the car and did not see anything out of the ordinary crew chief Wes Ward said, "The steering column went up quite a bit, but from what NASCAR's telling me, that's pretty common with a frontal impact like that. I don't think he actually hit the steering wheel that hard. It just kind of moved up. His helmet or face didn't really go down into it that hard because of the HANS and the seat belts. There wasn't anything in the car that we could say was bad. Everything did what it was supposed to do and everything held up."
